After eight years, 16 episodes of The Dream Hotel have been broadcast, and last year, viewing figures hit 173 million.

Province to get tough on tardy tourism projects

The projects had been licensed between one and two years ago, but the investors had either not begun work on them or failed to furnish investment plans to authorities.

Biennial drama festival kicks off

To encourage talented youths, only artists under the age of 40 are allowed to take part in the festival this year. "The regulation is set to give young artists an opportunity to perform on the stage, as well as to ensure that youths have enough opportunities to take main roles," said Vuong Duy Bien, director of the Art Performances Department under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

Vietnam Hotel Association chairwoman Do Thi Hong Xoan said current land taxes on tourism residences were unreasonable. “A resort covers 20 hectares, but the developer builds facilities on 35-40 per cent of the total area only. However, the same tax rate is applied to the whole area, costing the business a hefty sum and it is unreasonable,” Xoan said.

Halong-Fangchenggang sea route reopens

Director of provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Ha Quang Long said the inauguration ceremony of the route is expected to take place on April 12 at Hon Gai Vinashin Port in Halong city.

Tame elephants face extinction

The population of existing tame elephants is being overexploited for tourism and is under threat from poachers. Elephants are also not being encouraged to breed, according to a study on tamed elephants in the province by Central Highlands University, which showed that the number of tamed elephants in the province had declined sharply from 502 in 1985 to 84 in 2000 and fewer than 60 last year.
