Philippines stagger Viet Nam

The visitors created the biggest upset of the tournament so far with a strong defensive display that left defending champions Viet Nam searching for answers in their second group B match. It was the first time the Philippines had ever beaten Viet Nam in an international tournament.

Viet Nam to meet Singapore in make-or-break game

The hosts, who lost 2-0 to the Philippines on Sunday, must win to guarantee a spot in the semi-finals. The Philippines, who lead the group with four points, need only a draw with Myanmar to qualify for the last four. Singapore scraped a last minute 2-1 win over Myanmar on Sunday and will advance to the semi-finals if they draw with Viet Nam at the 40,000 capacity My Dinh National Stadium.

Masters set for showdown

The tournament will be held every two years by the Southeast Asian Chess Federation with a view of developing the regional chess movement. Eight or nine delegations will join this debut event, which is also an opportunity for players to warm up ahead of the next December's SEA Games in Indonesia. General Secretary of the Viet Nam Chess Federation Dang Tat Thang said Viet Nam would participate in both men's and women's categories.

Outdoor music fest to aid underprivileged

Organised by the Loreto Viet Nam Australia Programme (LVAP), the annual event raises approximately US$50,000 through sponsorship and attendance donations. LoretoFest 2010 is the fourth edition of the much anticipated concert where organizations and individuals in the city wanting to assist disadvantaged children join together for a day of good music, food and beverages, not to mention games and other activities for children. This year's LoretoFest highlights Viet Nam's top rock singer Pham Anh Khoa as the Loreto Ambassador, who has been participating in the event since its inception in 2007.

Banh it – sticky rice cake

Commonly, there are two kinds of “Banh it”. The first one is “Banh it la gai”, which is sticky rice cake with coconut or green bean stuffing wrapped in pinnate leaf. The second one is “Banh it tom thit” – glutinous rice cake with meat and shrimp, its name means “little meat shrimp cakes”, the stuffing is made of ground pork and shrimp mixed with spring onion and other spices.

Cudweed (khuc) grows during lunar January and February, when the drizzling rain lasts all day, and it can be found along the edges of rice fields. There are two kinds: “nep” and “te”. The latter is more flexible and fragrant and is preferred for making the cake.

Mut Tet, very delicious preserved fruit!

“Mứt Tết” refers to fruits or vegetables that have been prepared and canned for long term storage. The preparation of preserved fruit traditionally involves the use of pectin as a gelling agent, although sugar or honey may be used as well. There are various types of fruit preserves made in Vietnam, and they can be made from sweet or savory ingredients.

Beethoven concert to be on Hanoi stage

Hanoi audiences will also enjoy the pianissimo melody of the concerto for violin in D major performed by soloist Nguyen Huu Khoi Nam, a member of the French National Orchestra. The violinist graduated from the Boulogne Conservatory of Music and the Paris National Conservatory of Music, majoring in violin and chamber music. He is also one of the founders of the trio, ‘Turina,’ and the quartet, ‘Impresa,’ which won first prize at the National Chamber Music Competition in Paris.

Vietnam to compete in Asian Beach Games

The competition has attracted 45 countries and territories from across Asia. The 48 strong Vietnamese team will compete in 7 different events including body-building, long distance swimming, sepak takraw, handball, volleyball, football and basketball.

TV show features worldwide caravan tour

Titled Caravan Vong Quanh The Gioi (Caravan Round the World Trip) and produced by Indochina Media JSC of the Indochina Group, the 30 minute shows will be screened once a week at 11am every Sunday. The eight-person team will travel across all seven continents, with the first episode focusing on the Golden Triangle in the border area of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar.

At the Ngoi Sao Tieng Hat Truyen Hinh (TV Singing Star) contest, the 23-year-old HCM City Conservatory student sang Nguyen Cuong's Cho Nong Nan Bay Len (Flying with Love) and Em Muon Song Ben Anh Tron Doi (I Want to Live by Your Side Forever) with girl band Mat Troi Do, and Dick Krajan's Nong Nan Cao Nguyen (Passionate Highlands).
