Vietnam’s agricultural exports falter despite high prices

Vietnam, the world’s second-largest exporter after Brazil, shipped 40,000 tons in August, down 24.5 percent from the previous month. Coffee exports in the first eight months of the year were estimated by the General Statistics Office at 958,000 tons, 11 percent higher than a year earlier.

Prices of agro and aqua products soar in Mekong Delta

Ca Mau, Bac Lieu and Soc Trang provinces have continued to see a shortage of tiger shrimps, with prices continuing to rise. These provinces have faced shrimp shortage because of widespread epidemic diseases in shrimps in the region. One kilogram of shrimps loading about 20 pieces costs VND260,000-265,000 and one kilogram loading 30 pieces of shrimps costs VND190,000-200,000. In Dong Thap and Tien Giang provinces, traders are boosting the purchase of rice with prices of VND8,200-8,250 per kilogram of five-percent-broken rice and VND8,100-8,150 per kilogram of 15-percent-broken rice.

Produce quality expected to improve with new controls

Food safety inspections would be carried out from point of origin to final destination based on international standards, said Deputy Director of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development's Department of Agricultural, Forest and Aquatic Products Quality Control Department Phung Huu Hao. Management responsibilities would be clearly split between central and provincial levels, and each agricultural sector would have its own specific standards, he said at a workshop held yesterday to review food safety management in 2010 and to discuss the 2011 plan.

IFAD funds Vietnam’s agricultural development project

The funding, the largest that IFAD has given to Vietnam so far, will be used for the northern province of Tuyen Quang, the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai and the southern province of Ninh Thuan in the 2011-15 period. IFAD President Kanayo F. Reservoirs opened for drought-hit farmers

Deputy general director of Electricity of Viet Nam (EVN) Dang Hoang An said on Monday afternoon that the company had complied with a request from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) to make two releases of water from its reservoirs at the end of this month and in February to save crops. Deputy director of MARD's Irrigation Department Dang Duy Hien said that the survival of two-thirds of the rice crop under plantation in the north and north centre of the nation depended on water from the reservoirs.

Vietnam’s catfish industry looks to higher quality

The ministry held a meeting in Can Tho City on January 18 to review tra fish production and consumption in 2010 and make plans for 2011. Nguyen Huu Dung, chairman of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), was of the view that farmers should not raise more tra fish than needed which causes redundancy and devaluation in the market.

Speaking at the seminar, MARD Deputy Minister Ho Xuan Hung emphasised the Party’s consistent policy to develop farmers’ voluntary economic organisations. He said, with the innovation in macro-economic policies, cooperatives had proved their effectiveness in helping their member households to develop their economy.

The increase on Tuesday was its third time this year, and the company said it was meant to help farmers cope with high raw material costs and encourage them to sell more milk of better quality.

Farmers to expand cocoa growing areas

Speaking at a meeting on the industry's development, Dr Tong Khiem, director of the National Agriculture and Fisheries Extension Centre, said that although Vietnam began planting cocoa trees in 1980, the industry did not prosper until 2005. Industry growth was spurred by assistance from international organisations, the Vietnamese Government policies and higher prices for cocoa beans.

Rural areas lack funding

Viet Nam's rural areas are still thirsty for funds to develop production and trading activities because capital injection from the Government has been relatively modest, a Thoi Bao Kinh Te Sai Gon (Sai Gon Economic Times) report cites several experts as saying. Between 2003 and 2007, the State's investment in agriculture met just 17 per cent of the sector's demand. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has, in fact, reported that investment in rural areas and agricultural production has decreased in recent years.
