- Puffer export: the high hope dashed
Vietnamese puffer exporters are complaining that the unexpected import interruption has led to the loss of billions dong as tens thousands of puffers have not been exported. Nearly two years ago, Vietnamese farmers and enterprises were bustling with joy when the Government allowed them to carry out the project on processing and exporting puffer fish. The exports were hoped to bring more jobs and more money to farmers and enterprises.
- Labour exports look up for 2011
Dao Cong Hai, deputy director of the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs’ (MoLISA) Department of Overseas Labour, said that the shortcomings of 2010 could actually be a driving force for heightened labour exports in 2011. Hai’s assessment is that the country’s labour exports are quite strong, as more and more foreign firms prefer Vietnamese workers.
- Wooden furniture manufacturers don’t fear order shortage, fear higher costs
2011 is forecasted to be a busy year for wooden furniture producers as foreign partners have returned after the economic crisis and placed orders for 2011. A lot of enterprises said they have enough orders to bring jobs until the second quarter of the year.
- Tra fish exports set to increase 10 percent
The target was announced at a meeting on tra fish in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho on January 18 under the chair of MARD Deputy Minister Vu Van Tam. Other targets include expanding tra fish farming areas in Mekong Delta, the nation’s largest supplier of the fish, by 900 ha to 6,300 ha for a yearly catch of between 1.2 and 1.3 million tonnes and increasing fish fry production up to 2.6 billion fry from 2.4 billion last year.
- EU’s duties on VN’s shoes to expire on April 1
Vietnam’s trade mission in the EU, Belgium and Luxembourg quoted the European Commission (EC) spokesman John Clancy as saying "given that the European shoemakers' association has publicly stated that it has not applied for an extension of the duties on certain Chinese and Vietnamese shoes, it's therefore very clear to everyone that the current measures in place will expire on April 1.”
- Key industrial products aid capital’s growth
Under the programme, key industrial products were categorised into six groups: mechanical engineering, electrical and electronics, chemicals and plastics, footwear, garment and textile, paper and packaging, and processed foods. Assistance for the recognised enterprises included help in building and promoting trademarks, technology development and priorities to resolve land use rights and administrative procedures
- VN to export 6 mln tons of rice in 2011
According to the VFA, in 2011, Việt Nam’s rice export volume will depend on the rate of global rice inventory, rising prices of input, and the shifts in rice policy in import countries.
- Rice exporters face foreign competition
According to Truong Thanh Phong, Chair of the Vietnam Food Association, until now, foreign food enterprises had to set up joint ventures with Vietnamese enterprises, if they wanted to trade rice. However from this year, all enterprises, Vietnamese and foreign, will “play in a level field”, as Vietnam has to open the food market to foreign enterprises under the international commitments.
- Coffee prices exceed VND38,000/kg
This increase is attributed to a surge in coffee prices on the London market on the evening of January 11, from US$2,050 per tonne to US$2,105.
- Apparel product export targets $18-20b in 2015
Vietnam Garment and Textile Group (Vinatex) said that in 2010, the group maintained high export growth (up 23 percent year-on-year) and achieved export turnover target of $11.2 billion, considerably contributing to the country’s export turnover and maintaining amongst top ten world ’s apparel products exporters.
