Industrial park moves offset FDI downturn

Total foreign direct investment (FDI) commitments are declining in Vietnam, but new industrial park investment registration shows the country is still attractive to foreign manufacturers.

According to the Thai Garment Manufacturers Association (TGMA), rising local production costs have pushed five major Thai garment manufacturers to relocate to Vietnam, transferring combined investment of $50 million.

The workshop, titled “How to Win More Export Orders”, was co-organised by Kearny Alliance, a US-based non-profit organisation, and Protec, a helmet manufacturer under the Asia Injury Prevention Foundation. Some 85 per cent of the suppliers participating in the workshop said the event had provided them with useful information on different marketing techniques that could add great value to their businesses, a workshop survey showed.

High interest rates hurt Vietnam steel industry

Pham Chi Cuong, chair of the Vietnam Steel Association, said many businesses in the industry, from manufacturers to retailers, have been adversely affected by the high borrowing costs.

Polluting firms told to treat waste water

Only 37 out of 89 manufacturers in the zone are currently connected to the wastewater treatment facility, which has a capacity of 3,000 cubic metres a day. The remaining 52 manufacturers are discharging wastewater directly into the surrounding environment.

Support urged for auto industry

The Vietnamese Govern-ment’s industrial policy and negotiations with ASEAN over export/import tariffs had been vital in promoting the domestic CKD market to its current position. The course, starting from Nov. 16, is being jointly held by the Multilateral Trade Assistance Project, the third phase (EU-Vietnam Mutrap III), the Vietnam Leather and Footwear Association and the Footwear Components Manufacturers Association of Italy’s Toscana region.
