Tame elephants face extinction

The population of existing tame elephants is being overexploited for tourism and is under threat from poachers. Elephants are also not being encouraged to breed, according to a study on tamed elephants in the province by Central Highlands University, which showed that the number of tamed elephants in the province had declined sharply from 502 in 1985 to 84 in 2000 and fewer than 60 last year.

Universities urged to implement new education model

At the two-day workshop that ends today, Dr.Nguyen Duc Nghia, head of the Viet Nam National University-HCM City, said the university in January began implementing an eight-year pilot CDIO project. The project is taking place at the VNU's University of Technology's Mechanical Engineering Faculty and the University of Natural Science's Information Technology.

Scientists say that POPs harm human beings’ health and the environment across the world. POPs from insecticides and other sources enter the water surface in rivers, ponds or marshes. The Mekong is one of the world’s most important rivers but there little research on POPs has been carried out on this river.

Most of her work is of landscapes in Vietnam and over the past 16 years, she has created almost 100 paintings depicting the country, which she has a special attachment to. “When I think of Vietnam, I become inspired, so when I see changes in the country I want to bring it to life in my work,” the Professor at the Kyoto Seika University of the Arts told the daily newspaper Thanh Nien (Young People).

Too many wells give HCM City sinking feeling

The land sinkage has been blamed on falling artesian water levels and land that is too unstable for the current rate of development. "The overexploitation of underground water has been a large cause of land sinkage," Le Van Trung, director of the Geomatics Centre of the National University- HCM City, said.

Health costs expected to get even higher

Speaking at the conference held by the Ministry of Health, Nguyen Thi Kim Phuong, from the Viet Nam-based WHO, said that the study, under the co-operation of WHO and Ha Noi Medical University, showed that costs were increasing year by year. About 598,000 households fell into poverty after having treatment at hospitals in 2004, 694,000 in 2006 and 774,000 in 2008.

Firms in HCM city to need 50,000 workers by year-end

Of the total, 25% are university and college graduates, 30% are trained workers and the rest are manual ones. In fact, businesses in the city are in dire need of trained workforce. Though many companies had announced their recruitment plans for months, they could not recruit enough workers.

Lecturers told to use teaching methods that foster creativity

At the workshop on teaching methods, speakers noted that the Ministry of Education and Training had asked universities nationwide to apply new methodologies in the classroom. However, rote learning, with students only listening to lectures and not asking questions, was still the predominant method used at the university level, according to Dr. Pham Duc Chinh of the University of Economics and Law under Viet Nam National University-HCM City. Chinh said the traditional methods encouraged only passive learning, with many students unwilling to do research in the library or Internet.
