Construction of thermal power plant begins in Thanh Hoa

Construction of Cong Thanh coal-fueled power plant kicked off on Mar. 5 at the Industrial Park No. 2, Nghi Son Economic Zone, northern central province of Thanh Hoa.

Provinces receive wildfire alert as drought takes hold

Most of the provinces warned are in the southeast. Bac Giang, Binh Phuoc, Dong Nai, Ha Nam, Kon Tum, Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa and Tay Ninh provinces are said to be "extremely dangerous" because of the dry conditions they are experiencing.

Over VND2,600 billion invested in construction of Thanh Hoa airport

The airport will be built in Hai Ninh commune, Tinh Gia district, 30km away from Thanh Hoa City. The total investment capital is planned to reach more than VND2,600 billion.

Measures taken to ensure food safety

A survey into six wards in central Thanh Hoa City this year revealed that 33 per cent of food sold on the street was contaminated with bacteria. As many as 33.3 per cent of meat and meat products were found to be contaminated with bacteria; with 23.3 per cent infected with E.coli.  Another survey conducted in Minh Khai handicraft village in Hoai Duc District in Ha Noi this year by the Food Technology Centre, revealed that 15 per cent of food processing enterprises were too closely located to pigsties. Food was left to dry outside, and half of the households used sodium hydrogen sulphate which could cause gastritis.

Germany helps to protect Vietnam’s biodiversity

The 3 million EUR project, will be implemented by the Forestry Directorate under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) until 2013. With its head office in Hanoi, the project will focus its work on pilot areas, including the Ba Be National Park in Bac Kan province, Na Hang Nature Reserve in Tuyen Quang province, Pu Hu and Pu Luong Nature Reserves in Thanh Hoa province, Bach Ma National Park in Thua Thien Hue province and the buffer zones of these protected areas.

Investors gather at Yen Bai Province forum

These included foreign and domestic investors, economic-sector, ministry and international organisation representatives as well as diplomats. They will be shown the investment opportunities and economic potential of 12 north-western provinces as well as western Thanh Hoa and Nghe An provinces during the one-day conference. Participants will also witness the important presentation of investment certificates and the of signing investment co-operation agreements.

Works start on Cua Lo deepwater port

The port will serve exports and imports to and from Laos and northeastern Thailand as well as meet the socio-economic needs of nearby provinces and is in line with the development plan for an economic zone in the southern Thanh Hoa-North Nghe An.

Vietnam officials under fire for trying to sell seized tiger paste

Thanh Hoa Province People's Committee on November 19 agreed to allow agencies under its control to organize a public auction of 2.8 kilograms of tiger paste, with a starting price of 50 million dong (2,500 dollars) per kilogram. Illegal trafficking in tigers and other rare animals is widespread in Vietnam and China, where their bones and other body parts are often used in traditional medicine. On the black market, each kilogram of tiger paste can sell for up to 10,000 dollars per kilogram.

Largest irrigation project launched in Thanh Hoa

The Cua Dat water reservoir is the largest national irrigation work and hydro electric-power plant on the Chu river, 17km from the Bai Thuong dam. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) is the main investor of the project along with many prestigious contractors including the Vietnam Construction and Import-Export Joint Stock Cooperation (Vinaconex).

Nghi Son joint-venture distributor approved

Nghi Son is Viet Nam's second oil refinery. Located in central Thanh Hoa Province's Nghi Son Economic Zone, its planned capacity is 10 million tonnes of crude oil per year, or 200,000 barrels a day, 1.5 higher than the Dung Quat refinery.

Oyster harvests on the decline

Nam Dinh has more than 1,500ha of tidal flats in Giao Thuy and Nghia Hung districts. In Giao Xuan Commune in Giao Thuy, there are more than 100 oyster breeding households with 300ha of farming land. Since 1997 local farmers have had to buy young oysters from different provinces. Because of the poor living environment, young oysters from central Thanh Hoa and Nghe An provinces were degenerate. Moreover, the province does not have an oyster processing factory. Also the development of oyster breeding in Nam Dinh was relatively uncontrolled.
