Nation creates advanced mathematics institute

The institute, to be established in Ha Noi, aims to become a leading research centre allowing Vietnamese mathematicians to develop projects and nurture young talent. The Prime Minister has instructed the Ministry of Finance to source funding for the institute's operations. The Ha Noi People's Committee would be responsible for providing the institute's office.

City to relocate cemetery for residential area, park

About 100,000 tombs from the Binh Hung Hoa Cemetery in Binh Tan District will be relocated. The city has ordered an immediate stop to burials and the building of new tombs at the cemetery. The city People's Committee has tasked the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, the Justice Department and the Binh Tan District People's Committee to discuss ways to relocate the cemetery and submit a proposal to the city People's Council.

City bounces back from economic crisis

The city reached 17 of 22 socio-economic targets it had set for itself, only failing to achieve targets related to inflation, wastewater-treatment, water supply, export, and the number of firms penalised from pollution. Lawmakers agreed on an economic growth target of 12 per cent for next year which will take average income to above US$3,000. Deputy chairman of the People's Committee, Nguyen Thanh Tai, said the city's economic output this year is estimated at VND420 trillion ($21 billion), a growth of 11.5 per cent.

Vietnam officials under fire for trying to sell seized tiger paste

Thanh Hoa Province People's Committee on November 19 agreed to allow agencies under its control to organize a public auction of 2.8 kilograms of tiger paste, with a starting price of 50 million dong (2,500 dollars) per kilogram. Illegal trafficking in tigers and other rare animals is widespread in Vietnam and China, where their bones and other body parts are often used in traditional medicine. On the black market, each kilogram of tiger paste can sell for up to 10,000 dollars per kilogram.
