According to a Government Office announcement, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung agreed with Ninh Thuan People’s Committee to revoke the investment certificate of the long-delayed $9.8 billion Ca Na steel manufacturing complex project. The agreement put an end to the so called “illusive project”, which was registered for investment by Malaysia’s Lion Group and financially-troubled Vinashin three years ago. The case leaves lessons for local authorities, responsible for attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) to their provinces under the government’s decentralisation policy.

January rice exports hit record

Rice exporters had by the end of January registered to ship 1.5 million tonnes of rice on contracts, a year-on-year increase of 15.74 percent, the VFA said at a meeting with its member firms in Ho Chi Minh City on Feb. 10. They also registered a high volume on contracts to export rice in the first month of this year, mainly with Malaysia and Indonesia.

Vietnamese inflation may accelerate to 15pct, Credit Suisse says

Consumer-price growth may peak at 13 percent to 15 percent within “about three months,” Robert Prior-Wandesforde, the head of India and Southeast Asia economics at Credit Suisse, said by telephone from Singapore today. The fastest economic growth in three years, rising food prices and currency weakness have fanned local price pressures. The central bank has raised interest rates since the start of 2010, lagging behind counterparts from Thailand to Malaysia in boosting borrowing costs to damp inflation.

100 delegates attend seminar on amateur musical performance

The seminar was part of activities to gather data on the amateur performance art for submission to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to recorgnise it as intangible cultural heritage.

Music festival to foster regional amity

Seventeen professional singers representing television stations from eight ASEAN countries – Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Brunei and hosts Viet Nam, as well as two other guest singers from Japan will participate in the festival. Foreign investment tipped to rise

Foreign investment inflows last year, while positive, remained small compared to the amounts that foreigners were pouring into similar markets in Malaysia, Indonesia or Thailand. Vietnamese shares were cheap and their price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio good, but those factors had not been enough to overcome such negative factors as high inflation, exchange rate fluctuations and State policies that have continued to undermine the confidence of foreign investors.

Latex hits record high price

“This is the highest it’s ever been. It’s even higher than before the world recession,” general secretary of Viet Nam Rubber Association (VRA) Tran Thi Thuy Hoa said. “While demand on the production industry has increased significantly thanks to the recovery of the world economy, supplies from main rubber export countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Viet Nam have remained low,” Hoa said, explaining that rubber yields had been seriously affected by bad weather conditions.
