Mekong Expo 2011 opens in Can Tho Province

Businesses from the Mekong Delta provinces, Ho Chi Minh City, Tay Ninh, Lam Dong, Khanh Hoa, Dong Nai and Da Nang participated in the expo. The expo highlighted the economic achievements and the specialities of each province and city, as well as displayed the fine arts, handicrafts, machinery, technology, foods and various equipments of the regions.

Photo competition to spotlight VN's world heritage sites

Launched by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's Department of Fine Arts, Photography and Exhibitions in co-operation with the Viet Nam Association of Photographic Artists (VAPA), the Natural Cultural Heritage Department and National Administration of Tourism, the competition aims to draw attention to the value of the nation's UNESCO-recognised world heritages.

Festivals honour rice, heroes and pilgrims

The annual event at Soc Temple is of several festivals in the north to honour of Saint Giong, a legendary hero who is said to have defeated an army of foreign invaders. Participants at the Soc Temple festivities took part in offerings to the saint, the moc duc ceremony, symbolising a cleansing process for the temple, and the bamboo procession, which celebrates Saint Giong's martial arts skills with a bamboo weapon used to defeat the invaders.

Opportunities open for business in US

Seventeen Vietnamese businesses in the tourism, processed foods, fine arts and handicrafts and household items production industries attended the conference and the Asia – US trade fair. Demos Vardiabasis, chairman of a California-based entertainment and tourism consultancy, called the event a good opportunity for Vietnamese businesses to introduce their products to the US market.

Technicolour images of the abstract artist

Considered of Asia's most talented female artists, Van Duong Thanh grew up in Ha Noi where she studied for 12 years at the Fine Arts College and the Academy of Fine Arts. She was a researcher at the Institute of Culture in the capital from 1981 to 1987, and now divides her time between Sweden, where she teaches art, and Ha Noi.

South Korea hosts Vietnamese art exhibition

The exhibition themed Viet Nam Scenery and Spirit – Close up the Past, Looking to the Future introduces nearly 50 works of outstanding contemporary artists selected from collections of the Viet Nam Fine Arts Museum and the Viet Nam Fine Arts Association. The painters include masters graduating from the Indochina Fine Arts College, which was established in 1924 and is the precursor of the Viet Nam College of Fine Arts, and well-known painters of next generations.

The project would help promote comprehensive education for children and encourage the use of new teaching methods for fine arts at primary schools, said Education and Training Minister Pham Vu Luan at the signing ceremony last Tuesday.

Vietnam inspires Japanese Katazome painter

Most of her work is of landscapes in Vietnam and over the past 16 years, she has created almost 100 paintings depicting the country, which she has a special attachment to. “When I think of Vietnam, I become inspired, so when I see changes in the country I want to bring it to life in my work,” the Professor at the Kyoto Seika University of the Arts told the daily newspaper Thanh Nien (Young People).

Addressing the ceremony, Minister of Education and Training Pham Vu Luan affirmed that the project contributed to promoting comprehensive education for Vietnamese school children and encouraged new teaching methods in the fine arts subject at primary school level.

Vietnamese teen takes prize in Singapore piano contest

The competition, to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Chopin's birth, was organised for the first time by the Chopin Society (Singapore) and the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. The competition attracted 140 candidates from 15 countries and territories, including China, the Philippines, Indonesia, Viet Nam and host Singapore. Mi, a 13-year-old student at the Viet Nam National Academy for Music, beat 30 other competitors to win the prize for her performance of Ballades No 1 and Etudes No 5.

Exhibition spotlights nation's fine arts

The National Fine Arts Exhibition is held every five years to review and assess the state of Vietnamese fine arts. The works awarded and displayed at the exhibition are selected from 5,000 entries nationwide. They show the creativity, skill and increasing professionalism of Vietnamese artists. The works on show include paintings, graphics, installations and sculptures that reflect different perspectives on contemporary life and society.

Hanoi to host National Fine Arts Exhibition 2010

On display will be representative works from the 2006-10 period to gauge fine arts development during the process of national industrialisation and modernisation towards global integration.
