VN seeks int’l support for high-tech development

The Deputy PM affirmed that the Vietnamese Government would create favorable conditions for the establishment of advance research environment and research groups on these fields at the Việt Nam National University with the participation of world’s leading experts from American universities.

Vietnam’s real GDP growth may reach 6.3 pct: American magazine

The report said that the real GDP growth rate of Vietnam has been higher than expected, reaching 6.8 percent in 2010, mainly due to the performance of the construction sector. Fiscal deficit of Vietnam has reduced from 6.6 percent of GDP in 2009 to 4.7 percent in 2010.

The American band said on its website that it expected a total of 55,000 concert attendees in HCM City on March 24 and 26 in Hanoi. According to organisers, the show is the same as the performed on other stops during the band's worldwide tour.

S Koreans start $139m steel mill

The US$130 million mill, to cover 39,000 square metres, is expected to operate in February 2012. The mill will be the biggest stainless steel plant in the country, with the capacity of 150,000 tonnes per year and will employ 400 labourers. Products will be provided for local demand and exported to Southeast Asian, European and American markets.

American War poet begins Viet Nam literary journey

Weigl, whose name is familiar in literature about the American War, has published several poetical anthologies, including The Monkey Wars and Song of Napalm which earned him a Pulitzer Prize-nomination in 1988. Weigl was granted the Lannan Literary Award in Poetry in 2006. In addition to writing poetry, Weigl worked with editor and translator Thanh T. Nguyen of the Joiner Research Centre to translate poems of liberation soldiers captured during war.

Vietnam dong under devaluation cycle

According to Adam Sitkoff, Executive director of American Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam, the Vietnamese currency is facing problem. The dong is under the depreciation cycle. This is what the government should resolve soon. The depreciation of the dong would make inflation worse and cool the stock market. Not many countries want to stay in such circumstance. Some people said that the devaluation of dong is to help increase the competitiveness in export activities. However, the fiscal policy cannot help anything in this problem.

Vietnam price controls a ’violation’

The law on prices took effect on Oct 1 and allows state institutions to impose ’stabilisation’ measures if, for example, prices rise faster than production costs. ‘We believe that price controls do not work and are counterproductive to future growth,’ Hank Tomlinson, chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce, told the Vietnam Business Forum.

Foreign firms eager to invest in VN

"Viet Nam's success in attracting foreign investment has largely been built on the expectation of economic and political stability," American Chamber of Commerce, Amcham, chairman Hank Tomlinson told the forum - a prelude to the yearly donor Consultative Group meeting. Unfortunately, the Government's approach to economic and monetary policy had also raised concern, he said.

PM grants licence to new university

Located on 103 ha in Tan Duc Educational City, some 12km from HCM City, the new private TTU is unique among Vietnamese universities because it is based on an American model and has a non-profit status. TTU has been invested in and developed by Tan Tao Group, a leading diversified conglomerate encompassing industrial parks and infrastructure development that includes thermal power plants, renewable energy and water treatment plants, and media technology. Teaching and studying at TTU will be conducted in English.
